OPP CHARGE WHITBY DOCTOR UNDER THE HEALTH INSURANCE ACT

(WHITBY, ON) – Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Anti-Rackets Branch – Health Fraud Investigation Unit has charged a Whitby-area physician following an investigation into allegations of inappropriate billings to OHIP.

This investigation began when the Ministry of Health (MOH) detected irregularities in billings to the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) and reported the allegations to the OPP. The Ministry reported potential overbillings in excess of $170,000 during a three-year period ending in 2016. 

Following a thorough investigation, members of the Health Fraud Investigation Unit have charged Dr. Janet MENDONCA — aged 43 years of Ajax — with offences contrary to the Health Insurance Act (HIA) as follows:

• Knowingly obtaining payment for any insured service, while not entitled to obtain – HIA 43(1) (two counts); and,

• Knowingly giving false information in application, return or statement – HIA 43(3) (two counts).

The accused is expected to appear at the Provincial Offences Court at 605 Rossland Road East in Whitby on November 18.
