TRUCK FIRE CLOSES HIGHWAY 401 IN PORT HOPE NEAR WESLEYVILLE ROAD

It was approximately 10PM this evening that emergency services were called to the eastbound lanes on highway 401 in Port Hope near Wesleyville Rd for a fully engulfed transport truck.

Port Hope Fire and Emergency Services were quick to respond, however it was a total loss for the truck. Northumberland OPP quickly closed the highway as firefighters worked to extinguish the fire.

The driver was able to escape the truck uninjured. We caught up with the driver who told us he had just left the Port Hope Onroute when his truck started to drive weird. He quickly pulled over and opened the hood to find his engine bay on fire.

The highway remained closed for some time while crews worked to extinguish the fire with traffic exiting the highway at Wesleyville Rd and detouring along CR-2. Currently, one lane has been opened for traffic to get by.

The Ministry of Environment has been contacted due to a diesel spill into the nearby ditch.

No injuries were reported during this incident.
