Shortly before 9:45pm last night emergency services were called to a single-vehicle MVC near CR-18 and Rosneath Landing Rd. At this point, details are slowly coming in as the investigation has been taken over by the Provinces Special Investigations Unit.
At this point, we know that a single-vehicle that appeared to be a pick-up truck was heading west on CR-18. It is unknown what exactly caused the accident but the vehicle left the roadway, spinning out and parking on a nearby front lawn. It appears that in the process of leaving the roadway the vehicle struck something in its course causing significant damage to the rear of the truck.
Despite the best life-saving efforts of Northumberland Paramedics and Alnwick/Haldimand Fire Department, the lone occupant of the vehicle was pronounced deceased on the scene. The OPP held the scene until investigators with the SIU arrived at around 11:00PM. First responders were slowly released from the scene shortly before the arrival of the SIU. The SIU confirmed with us that there is an active investigation ongoing and we can expect an update at some point today.
The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault, and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must consider whether the official has committed a criminal offense in connection with the incident under investigation depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so or close the file without any charges being laid publicly report the results of its investigations
