Severe thunderstorm warning in effect

Severe thunderstorm warning in effect for:

  • Belleville – Quinte West – Eastern Northumberland County
  • Cobourg – Colborne – Western Northumberland County

At 6:28 p.m. EST, Environment Canada meteorologists are tracking a line of severe thunderstorms capable of producing very strong wind gusts, pea to dime size hail and heavy rain.

This line of severe thunderstorms is located from Lake Clear to Ajax, moving southeast at 40 km/h.

Hazard: 90 km/h wind gusts.

Locations impacted include:
Oshawa, Peterborough, Whitby, Bowmanville, Darlington Provincial Park, Orono, Newcastle, Lakefield, Mark S. Burnham Provincial Park, Serpent Mounds Provincial Park, Woodview, Petroglyphs Provincial Park, Quackenbush Provincial Park, Norwood, Havelock, Lower Madawaska River Provincial Park and Denbigh.

Take cover immediately, if threatening weather approaches. Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles. Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors!

Severe thunderstorm warnings are issued when imminent or occurring thunderstorms are likely to produce or are producing one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall.

The Office of the Fire Marshal and Emergency Management recommends that you take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches.
