As part of its commitment towards breaking down barriers for peoples with disabilities, the Town of Cobourg will be celebrating National AccessAbility Week (NAAW) from May 30-June 5, 2021 with the launch of a virtual schedule of events including a keynote speaker.
The national theme for the week is Disability Inclusion 2021: Leaving No One Behind with a focus on dealing with isolation during the COVID-19 pandemic. This year celebration activities for NAAW will be virtual in keeping with all provincial and local health unit guidelines.
“Everyone benefits from an economy and society without barriers to inclusion,” said Jamie Kramer, Accessibility Coordinator for the Town of Cobourg. “We are actively working towards removing barriers to accessibility and invite residents to join us in celebrating all those persons with disabilities who enrich our community.”
The Town of Cobourg invites residents to participate in any of the following online activities and to register for a free keynote address from one of Canada’s most decorated Paralympic athletes, Benoît Huot. Born with a disability in his right leg known as clubfoot, Benoît started swimming at eight years of age and, in the last two decades, received 20 medals in five Paralympic Games and won 32 medals in six World Championships as a Member of the Canadian National from 1998 to 2018. Benoît is passionate about inspiring others to look beyond their own boundaries.
