Alnwick/Haldimand Fire extinguish a recycling fire at the Northumberland Material Recovery Facility

Shortly after 10PM tonight, the Alnwick/Haldimand Fire Department were called to an automatic fire alarm at the Northumberland County Material Recovery Facility on Edwardson Rd.

The first due truck called dispatch upon arrival to alert other stations to respond as smoke was visible from vents across the building.

The Northumberland OPP responded to the scene along with Northumberland Paramedics.

Firefighters made entry to the building to find piles of recycling burning inside. It is unknown at this time what caused the fire however it is likely that the air movement due to the automatic hood vents carried the flames to neighbouring piles of recycling.

A second fire was located within the building but was quickly extinguished. Overhaul operations commenced shortly after midnight.

No employees were in the building at the time of the fire. As well, no injuries were sustained during the incident.

An employee of the facility told Northumberland County Breaking News Feed that the building strictly accepts recycling only.
