On Saturday, June 12 around 2:20pm, Port Hope Police say a concerned citizen called 9-1-1 to report a possible impaired driver on Elgin St in Cobourg headed towards Port Hope. The witness advised police that he was two vehicles behind the suspect vehicle however the vehicle was seen swerving in and out of its westbound lane crossing into the eastbound lane several times.
The witness remained on the line with dispatch until officers could arrive on scene. Upon arrival officers located the vehicle in a parking lot on Lake St after receiving direction from the witness.
The driver identified by police as 40 year old Adam Bell from Port Hope was found asleep, slumped over the wheel of his vehicle. The vehicle was still in drive, but amazingly Bell still had his foot on the brake. Practice makes perfect and practice he had.
Bell is currently before the courts answering to two previous impaired driving charges. In February 2021 Bell was found by Northumberland OPP slumped over the wheel of his vehicle in a live lane on Durham St, Colborne. That time he was arrested and charged with Impaired Operation – Drugs.
Port Hope Police arrested the man on the scene, and again charged him with Impaired Operation – Drugs.
Bell will appear before a judge again in July to answer to his charges.
