Two Oshawa residents arrested for possession of a controlled substance following a traffic stop in the Town of Cobourg

Just after midnight, on June 23, 2021, police on general patrol in the north end of Cobourg observed a vehicle operating with unauthorized plates. A traffic stop was conducted, and upon further police investigation, the driver and passenger were found to be in possession of a quantity of substances contrary to the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.

As a result, the two occupants of the vehicle were arrested.

Nicholas MCCARTHY, a 29-year-old man from Oshawa, was charged with the following:

  1. Use plate not authorized contrary to section 12(1)(d) of the Highway Traffic Act
  2. Drive motor vehicle – no licence contrary to section 32(1) of the Highway Traffic Act
  3. Possession of a Schedule I Substance contrary to section 4(1) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act
  4. Fail to comply with probation contrary to section 733.1(1) of the Criminal Code of Canada

Courtney GIROUX, a 30-year-old woman from Oshawa, was charged with the following:

  1. Possession of a Schedule I Substance contrary to section 4(1) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act 

Both individuals were released from police custody on an appearance notice with a future court date.
