CHARGES LAID AFTER FIREARM ACCIDENTLY DISCHARGED

Members of the Peterborough County Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a weapons complaint at a business on Highway 7 this afternoon at approximately 1:15pm. 

The victim accidently discharged a firearm that was located in a vehicle that was being serviced. The victim was struck in the leg by a single round of .44 calibre ammunition and was transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The victim is also the registered owner of the vehicle that was being serviced. There is no threat to public safety.

The 60 year old victim from Havelock-Belmont-Methuen Township, Ontario was charged with:

• Unauthorized possession of a prohibited weapon or firearm

• Careless use of firearm, weapon, prohibited device or ammunition

• Occupant of motor vehicle knowing there was prohibited or restricted weapon

The accused is scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Peterborough on August 24, 2021.
