Man charged with assault of a peace officer and public intoxication after police respond to report of a suspicious person

On Monday, August 23, 2021, police received a report of a suspicious person near Division Street and King Street in the Town of Cobourg. The complainant reported that a man hit the back of the complainant’s vehicle window and was now in the middle of the road.

Upon arrival, police located a man matching the description provided. Subsequent police investigation determined that he was intoxicated.  Police attempted to make the arrest, and the man became assaultive.  Police deployed a conductive energy weapon and were able to affect the arrest without injury.

As a result, 30-year-old Matthew Vetor of Newtonville was charged with the following offences:

  • Assault Peace Officer Contrary to section 270 (1)(a) of the Criminal Code x2
  • Assault with Intent to Resist Arrest – Contrary to Section 270(1)(b) of the Criminal Code of Canada
  • Being intoxicated in a public place contrary to section 31(4) of the Liquor Licence Act

Vetor was held until sober and later released on an Undertaking with conditions.
