Members of the Peterborough County Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were called to a break and enter and theft at a County Road 19 business at approximately 6:00am on August 24, 2021. The complainant reported that two vehicles had been stolen from the property. One of the vehicles was recovered a short distance from the scene after it was abandoned after being involved in a collision. An investigation led by the Peterborough/Northumberland Community Street Crime Unit (CSCU) was able to identify a suspect after reviewing the surveillance video and speaking with witnesses. The suspect was located and arrested yesterday afternoon. The second stolen vehicle was recovered at the scene of the arrest. The suspect is facing numerous charges in regards to thefts of vehicles and catalytic converters in Peterborough County, Haliburton County and the City of Peterborough.
Joseph BELL (age 29) of Trent River, Ontario was arrested and charged with:
• Theft of motor vehicle-two counts
• Theft under $5000 from a motor vehicle-four counts
• Uttering threats-cause death or bodily harm
• Possession property obtained by crime under $5000
• Failure to comply with release order-other than to attend court
• Mischief under $5000
The accused is scheduled to appear for a bail hearing in the Ontario Court of Justice in Peterborough later today.
