SUSPECTS ARRESTED AFTER FLEEING POLICE

Members of the City of Kawartha Lakes Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) along with the Kawartha Lakes Police Service were involved in a multijurisdictional investigation and arrest after the a traffic complaint led to a OPP vehicle being struck.

Shortly before 7:00 p.m. on September 11, 2021 officers received a report of a traffic complaint on Highway 35 near Norland. Officers located the vehicle, and attempted to identify the driver and conduct a traffic stop, which resulted in the OPP vehicle being struck by the suspect vehicle.

The vehicle with driver and passenger failed to stop for officers and was not pursued for public safety reasons. Numerous traffic complaints about the same vehicle were reported to the police over the next hour and half.

An attempt to stop the motor vehicle by the Kawartha Lakes Police Service was also made without success.

At approximately 8:30 p.m. another traffic complaint was called in on Highway 7 near Oakwood. Officers deployed a spike belt successfully and the suspects were subsequently arrested and charged.

Robert TAYLOR, 33 years of age, of Peterborough has been charged with:

  • Dangerous operation – two counts
  • Flight from peace officer – two counts
  • Unauthorized Possession of Weapon
  • Drive Vehicle with cannabis readily available
  • Use plate not authorized for vehicle
  • Drive Motor Vehicle with open container of liquor
  • Failure or refusal to comply with demand
  • Possession of a schedule I substance for the purpose of Trafficking – Other Drugs
  • Possession of a schedule I substance with the purpose of Trafficking – Methamphetamine
  •  Possession of Firearm or ammunition contrary to Prohibition Order x 3
  • Failure to comply with release order- other than to attend court
  • Class G1 licence holder – unaccompanied by qualified driver
  • Notice driver- B.A.C. above zero

The accused remains in custody and is scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Lindsay at a later date.

Michael WALLWORK, 31 years of age, of Peterborough was also charged with Obstruct Peace Officer.

Thank you to all the citizens who continued to call in the dangerous driving as they observed it, without their assistance the OPP may not have located the suspects.
