COBOURG POLICE – UPDATE – FIVE ARRESTED IN THEFT FROM VEHICLES INVESTIGATION

Police have arrested five people in connection to thefts from vehicles and property in the Town of Cobourg as a result of an ongoing investigation into property related crimes.

Since October 2021, Cobourg Police Service (CPS) has received 53 reports of theft from vehicles in Cobourg. In ten of the reported theft from vehicles, a car window was smashed to gain access to the vehicle, and in the other cases, suspects gained entry through an unlocked door. In all occurrences, personal property was taken from the vehicle.

The mobilization of the service’s tiered policing model has provided enhanced investigative capabilities. The Criminal Investigation Branch, Forensic Identification Services, Scene of Crime Officers, and Special Constables canvassed affected neighbourhoods to gain dash cam and home surveillance video footage in the area. CPS increased patrols in key neighbourhoods, and increased crime prevention opportunities through the Lock It or Lose It program and Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) program led by the auxiliary members.

These incidents have mainly taken place after dark in residential neighbourhoods and vehicles have been the most prevalent target. Police have been able to identify several persons of interest through home and commercial video surveillance provided by residents and business owners.
