Trailer detaches from tractor on Elgin St – all lanes blocked

It was approximately 11:00 p.m. Wednesday evening when members of the Cobourg Fire Department noticed a damaged trailer across all lanes of travel on Elgin Street near the fire station (just east of Boggs Rd) in the Town of Cobourg.

It is reported that a tractor trailer was leaving a yard on Elgin Street just east of Boggs Rd when the trailer detached from the tractor, hitting the road, crushing the landing gear and sliding to its resting place. The driver was uninjured.

Northumberland County Breaking News Feed has learned that the driver did not do a “tug test” confirming the trailer was locked onto the fifth wheel plate.

Elgin Street was blocked between D’Arcy and Division streets. The roadway is expected to reopen around 3:00 a.m.

It’s unknown if charges were laid. The trailer is fully loaded.
